Discover Your World in Oviedo, Spain

  • The city of Oviedo is one of the most important centers of cultural activity in the northwest of Spain. With nearly 200,000 inhabitants it is also the capital of the "Principado de Asturias", and the geographical, administrative, commercial, and cultural center of the region.
  • The climate in Asturias is quite mild, except in the high mountains, and often rainy. The mountains and villages along the coast are ideal places to vacation.
  • Oviedo has a very active cultural life with concerts, operas, conferences, congresses, museums, libraries, exhibitions, etc.
  • The University of Oviedo was founded towards the end of the 16th Century.
  • Students attend the Spanish Courses for Foreigners" program at the university.

Your Classes

The following are course descriptions for the "Cursos de Lengua y Cultura Espanolas Para Extranjeros" offered by the Universidad de Oviedo. Courses are 3 credits each. All students are expected to complete at least 4 courses each semester.

  • Students take a placement exam and are placed into either the intermedio level (upper division courses at the 300 or 3rd year level) or avanzado level (upper division courses at the 400 or 4th year level).
  • The Spanish Courses for Foreigners program at the University of Oviedo offers courses devoted specifically to the study of Spanish language and culture.
  • An additional tool to help you in the course review and selection process is our Course Equivalency Database.  Click the link to view and use the database in order to find courses taken at this university by previous participants in this program and see the SUNY New Paltz course equivalent.
  • All courses at the University of Oviedo are taught in Spanish.
  • Students can earn between 12 and 15 credits per semester.
  • Students who have successfully completed at least two full-time semesters of college level study are eligible to apply.  A minimum GPA of 2.5 at the time of application is required for this program.  In addition, students must also have completed the equivalent of Intermediate Spanish II prior to participation.
  • Students who are interested in internship or volunteer opportunities should ask the International Office at the University of Oviedo about current opportunities during their on-site orientation in Oviedo.
  • SUNY New Paltz will arrange for a native of the area to be available to the participants during the first few weeks of the program while students locate housing and select courses, and to provide some orientation to the city and university.

Your Home Away from Home

Home-stay: You will be place with a home stay family located within walking distance to the school. The homestay includes accommodation in a single room and three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner).  These families all have experience with hosting international students.

Visas and Immigration

Visa requirements frequently change and you are ultimately responsible for correctly completing any immigration requirements.  Please do not apply for a visa or purchase airplane tickets until you have received information and support documentation from the SUNY New Paltz Center for International Programs office.

        Non-US Citizens: check with Spanish consulate for visa requirements
