Diversity Abroad Honors Scholarship Program

Diversity Banner

Description

SUNY’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) is expanding its undergraduate scholarship program to diverse students interested in participating in one of SUNY’s many study abroad programs.

The Diversity Abroad Honors Scholarship Program (DAHSP) recognizes the valuable benefit that SUNY’s international education programs provide. Through this program, ODEI hopes to offset the costs of participating in an approved credit-bearing overseas academic program by providing up to $2000 to be used toward the approved program. DAHSP supports ODEI’s mission in striving to promote inclusive educational programs that reward academic excellence and those that expand students’ knowledge of diverse peoples throughout the world.

An additional scholarship in the amount of $1000 funded by the Center for International Programs at SUNY New Paltz will be available during this application cycle. There will be two scholarships awarded for this cycle, one for $2000 and one for $1000.

Eligibility

  • Students must be applying to participate in an approved credit-bearing SUNY study abroad program, preference given to students participating in a SUNY New Paltz study abroad program.
  • Students must be enrolled in a degree program with a declared major at a sponsoring SUNY campus.
  • Rising sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to compete for travel awards.
  • Minimum GPA requirement: 3.0
  • Students must demonstrate financial need by submitting their most recent Financial Aid Award Letter.
  • Candidates must be United States citizens or permanent resident aliens and New York State residents.

Application

All of these items will be a part of your application checklist, once an online application is started.  All application materials are due by October 1 with no exceptions.
  • A completed application form, signed and submitted to ODEI by the SUNY New Paltz Center for International Programs
  • A personal essay (1-2 pages) outlining what the candidate hopes to achieve through study abroad, such as cultural/language immersion, research, mentorship, travel, etc.
  • One recommendation (i.e.: Department Chair, Faculty Advisor, Program or Research Coordinator) - Recommendation form/questionnaire and accompanying letter on institutional letterhead. Students must request this recommendation separately from any recommendations requested for the study abroad program application. In other words, the study abroad program recommendation cannot be used for this scholarship.
  • Applicant Questionnaire
  • Financial Aid Award Letter
