Location Description

Curtin University of Technology is situated in the city of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Perth enjoys a climate similar to California or the South of France. The nearby Indian Ocean provides a playground for outdoor recreation. It is clean, as are the hundreds of kilometers of white sandy beaches. Perth is a modern city with a low cost of living. It is Australia's sunniest capital, with a moderate climate and a year round daily average of 8 hours of sunshine. Summers are warm and dry with temperatures in the mid 90° F most days, and cool evenings.

Academic Program

Students may take classes in any of the following study areas:
  • Humanities
  • Engineering and Science
  • Health Science
  • Business
Some things to consider when looking up courses on the Curtin website:

Credit Scale

Curtin Credits US Credits
25 5
20 4
15 3
10 2

At Curtin University, courses are referred to as "units".  Remember, the academic year is reversed in Australia so Semester 1 corresponds to the Spring semester here in the US.  Semester 2 corresponds to the Fall semester.

In addition to getting your potential courses pre-approved by your academic advisor, the faculty at Curtin University will also be reviewing your eligibility to take certain classes to ensure you have the necessary pre-requisites.  Curtin has put together PRE-APPROVED STUDY PACKS to help speed the process up.  The courses listed at the previous link are all pre-approved by the faculty at Curtin so all you will need to do is gain approval from your academic advisor.

If you wish to take courses not listed in the pre-approved study packs, please visit Curtin's website for a more detailed list of additional AVAILABLE COURSES within the study areas.

An additional tool to help you in the course review and selection process is our Course Equivalency Database.  Click the link to view and use the database in order to find courses taken at this university by previous participants in this program and see the SUNY New Paltz course equivalent.

Housing

curtin housing
Students can choose to live off-campus in and around Perth, but most Study Abroad students choose to live in one of the six on-campus residences. Accommodation is in apartments or "cottages" with separate bedrooms, shared kitchens and living areas. This communal living gives you the chance to meet people, make friends and experience Australian student life.

Curtin's Housing Services Office gives full details of all on-campus and off-campus housing options.
